October’s Message – ‘Three Steps Deeper’

October’s full moon, called the Hunter’s Moon, occurs on Tuesday, October 7th. It is also the first of three consecutive supermoons.

The Hunter’s Moon is given this name because, traditionally, this was the time of the year when the hunters were very active, trapping game and preparing food for the coming winter.

In the skies,  the Orionid meteor shower peaks on October 22nd, and if you look for the constellation of Orion (the well-known three stars of Orion’s belt), away from the glare of city lights, you may be lucky enough to see the meteor shower.

And from Spirit, the message is that it is a time for quiet reflection and stillness… ‘go deeper. ‘

In September,  we were encouraged to expand into new ways of thinking. This can feel exhilarating, expansive and exciting. But just like the ocean ebbs and flows, there is a rhythm to life.

September’s movement was the incoming of new ideas (the flow), but now the tide has turned, and we should embrace the ebb (the receding).

We see this cycle of ebb and flow throughout the natural world:

  • The Wheel of the Year (Summer turns to Winter and back again)
  • Birth and death (leaves on the trees, the harvest, blossoms, animals, and humans)
  • Times of great work, and times of stillness
  • The Moon (New Moon of potential, and Full Moon of harvesting that potential)
  • Sun and Moon, light and dark, day and night
  • Female and male, feminine and masculine, yin and yang

How do you feel about sitting in stillness and quiet reflection?

Sometimes what your body truly needs isn’t more effort, it’s more energy. And there’s a powerful way to build that energy you might not expect… standing still.” Lee Holden, Qigong Teacher

This is a time to reassess and re-evaluate priorities and values, particularly:

  • Finances
  • Health
  • Material possessions
  • Habits (food, sleep, journaling, meditation, being creative)

Give yourself a score of 1 – 10 on each of the above priorities and values, with 1 being ‘oh dear!’ and 10 being ‘I’ve got this in the bag’.

The journey to our hearts is an inward one, and sometimes it is easy to get distracted by outward ‘stuff’. When we get distracted and focused on everyone and everything else, it is easy to become off-balance.

Being still is a way to regain balance.

Heart light

When we find ourselves off-balance, it is easy to trudge the path of judgment, shame or guilt. Instead, use stillness as a time to take stock and prioritise self-care and self-worth. You and I are valuable, and we carry the Divine Spark within our hearts. We are not victims of circumstances, but always the creators of our own realities.

‘If you want to go three steps forward, you must first go three steps deeper. ’ – Gauranga Das, Buddhist Monk
