April 2024 Full Moon – Our Body – Our Temple

The full moon is on Tuesday 23rd April (ET) or Wednesday 24th April (UK), and it is called the Pink Moon, due to the colour of the blooming of a certain flower called Phlox Subulate or ‘Moss’.

The Chinese called it The Peony Moon and the Celts, The Budding Moon.

Spring has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere!

Astrologically, the sun is in the earth sign of Taurus (the Bull) while the moon is in the water sign of Scorpio (the Scorpion).

The energy of Taurus is sensual, earthy and deliberate while the passionate Scorpio plunges deeply and intensely into the mysteries of life.

What does this Full Moon ask us to consider?

During the April New Moon and intense Solar Eclipse we were invited to balance the fiery Aries energy with cool, calm balance, by practising how to centre ourselves.

Now the energy changes from a mental focus to that of the body. We are not just minds, but we have bodies too.

Bodies that are with us all the time, yet how often do we take our bodies for granted?

Now is the time to notice the intense magic that happens when we breathe:

.

breathe

Just breathe

When we inhale: our ribcage expands, the muscles between our ribs enlarge, our diaphragm drops and the air rushes in. The tiny alveoli (little sacs in our lungs) facilitate an exchange of incoming oxygen and existing carbon dioxide in the bloodstream.

And then we exhale: the diaphragm and rib muscles relax, reducing the chest cavity and the lungs deflate. Carbon dioxide now flows out of our lungs and is breathed out through the nose or mouth.

The heart

Then we have the magic of experiencing the greatest pump in the world – our hearts:

.

This fist sized muscle in the middle of our chests beats continually, pumping blood around the body, tirelessly working for us, often with no thanks.

  • “Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times.
  • Give a tennis ball a good, hard squeeze. You’re using about the same amount of force your heart uses to pump blood out to the body. Even at rest, the muscles of the heart work hard—twice as hard as the leg muscles of a person sprinting.” (quoted from NOVA online)

When did you last put your hand over your heart and just feel it beating?

We berate our body so much. We judge it, we criticise it, we starve it, we overfeed it, we compare it to others, we complain about it and we push it too hard.

Yet our bodies are the temple in which our soul is housed.

Our bodies are the vehicle in which we get to participate in life here on Earth.

We are encouraged to STOP for a moment and think of magic that happens continually in our:

  • Bones
  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Fascia
  • Organs
  • Nerves
  • Glands
  • Blood
  • Lymph
  • Hormones
  • Cells
  • Chemicals

All play their part, just so that you and I can walk this Earth, be on this planet, and take part in Life.

Perhaps it’s time to stop and take a minute to express gratitude to our bodies. We can thank the different parts for their tireless work at keeping us going.

stop and be thankful

Be thankful

I wish for us all a moment of reflection and appreciation for our bodies and all they do for us.

With love and light
