May New Moon 2 – Discover Joy

On Tuesday, 27th May 2025, we will experience the New Moon in fun and airy Gemini  (the Twins).

Gemini energy is the life and soul of the zodiac party.

What does this mean for us at the time of the New Moon?

Stop overthinking and have some fun. It’s time to inject some joy into our lives. 

What is joy? It is a feeling of deep happiness that is rooted in a sense of purpose and well-being. 

When we experience joy, we feel connected to others and our environment. 

But I wonder, can we experience joy more often than just when we see or hear something funny? I think the answer must be yes.

The 14th Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler, a psychiatrist, wrote a book called ‘The Art of Happiness’. In it, the Dalai Lama states that we can change our happiness by training our minds.

Pleasure can come from acquiring things, but happiness is connected to a sense of self-worth.

We find happiness in connecting deeply with other people.

Compassion and loving kindness are keys to being happy.

The Dalai Lama defines compassion as a “state of mind that is nonviolent, nonharming, and nonaggressive”.

He states that “happiness is not ready-made, rather it comes from our own actions”.

Furthermore, “we can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves”.

Therefore, the development and training of our minds are key to happiness. How do we do this?

Here are some simple but profound suggestions. How well would you score yourself on each idea?

  1. Become aware of your thoughts. Become the observer of your mind and notice how scattered or centred your thoughts are. 
  2. Meditate.
  3. Practice deep breathing exercises.
  4. Be involved in creative activities.
  5. Read more.
  6. Learn something new – the brain is plastic.
  7. Sleep 6-8 hours every night.
  8. Eat healthily.
  9. Practice gratitude on a daily basis – keep a gratitude diary.
  10. Exercise regularly.
  11. Connect with other people – don’t isolate yourself. 
  12. Be empathetic and practise kindness to yourself and to other people.

It’s time to make peace with ourselves and discover that deep well of inner joy that exists inside us all.
