January Message – Just Start!

January tells us to act on our ideas – and not procrastinate.

The card is The Ace of Wands, reversed (upside down).

The Ace of Wands

This card shows a divine hand coming out of the clouds to give us the wand of inspiration. There are small flames on the wand indicating creative ideas.

The land is open and empty, and the sky is clear. In the distance, we see a castle, which is a symbol of future achievement.

The number 1 or Ace in both Tarot and Kabbalah represents a new beginning – something seeming to appear out of nothing.

This shows a time of raw creative potential and purpose.

What does this all mean for January?

We are born with a creative spark within us. This appears when we receive ideas or inspiration, seemingly out of nowhere. We are co-creators with God. God/the Universe/the Divine wants us to participate and direct our own lives. We are not meant to sit back and live in fear. Neither are we meant to procrastinate.

Sometimes we can also feel overwhelmed when creative inspiration strikes us, usually because we have no idea where to start.

How do we achieve a goal?

Charles R. Snyder, an American psychologist and professor who specialised in Positive Psychology taught that there are two obstacles we need to overcome to achieve a goal:

  1. Not believing we can achieve the goal.
  2. Not identifying the pathway to achieving the goal.

The easiest example of this is a New Year’s Resolution. We commit ourselves to something, but how often do we abandon the idea by February?

Snyder offers five tried and tested tactics for achieving a goal:

  1. Connect every goal to a WHY.

This makes it easier to eliminate distractions and it creates clarity as to why this is important in your life.

It may help to write a statement like “I want to _________ so that I can _______.”

2. Start small and start NOW.

Goals take time, energy, and focus and it takes at least 21 days to form a new habit (sometimes up to 66 days).

So, don’t expect to be perfect.

Just start by taking small steps.

3. Break your goals down into bitesize chunks.

He suggests that rather than saying ‘I need to read 50 books this year’, it is better to say, ‘I need to read 3 pages every day’.

This stops us from feeling overwhelmed and putting off the goal to some later date in the future.

4. Remove obstacles before they begin.

Before you start something new, ask yourself “What could prevent me from accomplishing this goal?”

Write down any excuses, fears, or obstacles because as you put down your worries, it creates more space in the mind to calm your anxieties and see a way forward.

5. Celebrate your wins.

Take the time to celebrate small successes.

Some efforts will not have gone according to our plans. However, when we celebrate our wins it releases dopamine (the feel-good hormone) into the bloodstream. It also reinforces our positive behaviour and the changes that we have made.

I wish you a successful 2025 and I hope you achieve a goal you have set yourself for the coming year.
