This morning I asked for a Tarot message that would show what we need to focus on for the month of October.
The result was The Devil.
The Devil
When this card appears in a reading, it stirs up great fear in people.
It also creates the false impression that Tarot cards are ‘of the devil’ and the occult.
Let me reassure you that nothing could be further from the truth, and the meaning of this card is actually one of release.
Perhaps it would be more helpful to look at the card in terms of the cartoon with the angel and the devil sitting on someone’s shoulder.
Devil and angel
We have all seen the cartoons where the devil whispers something in the one ear, while the angel whispers the opposite in the other ear. In cartoons this is called a comic device, used for either comic or dramatic effect. This is used to show that the character is struggling with an inner conflict.
While we don’t physically see these two characters on our shoulders in real life, we do however understand the message. A part of us is trying to encourage us to do the ‘right’ thing, while another part of us argues that temptation and the ‘wrong’ thing would be much more fun and easier and take a lot less effort.
But how does this card then relate to the month of October and what are we being asked to heal and transform? Let’s look at the card a little closer…
When we look at the card from Juliet Sharman-Burke’s deck, we see the devil sitting in the dark, above a box, holding a flaming torch trying to set the people on fire. The people (a man and a woman) have chains around their necks and at first glance, the circumstances look dire.
However, look a little closer and you will see that the people only have chains around their necks and their hands are in fact, free. All they need to do is to untie themselves and walk out of their self-imposed prison.
This card fits very neatly into the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) view of Autumn. In Autumn, we are asked to let go and release stagnant energy that no longer serves us. Just as the trees are shedding their leaves in readiness for the new leaves that we will see in the Spring, we are being asked to do the same.
Autumn leaves
But, before we can expand into the new, we need to become aware of, and let go of the old, stagnant, negative beliefs that hold us back from being mentally and emotionally free.
The Devil card therefore represents our shadow side and asks us to look objectively at our negative and self-limiting beliefs, fears, depression, and/or addictions that we are holding on to.
Questions to ask and journal:
- What holds you back?
- What don’t you like about yourself?
- How are you living with fear or anxiety?
- What’s really going on under the surface?
- What are you trying to avoid?
- What are you addicted to and don’t want to give up? (e.g., food for emotional comfort, alcohol to numb the raw, deep emotions or pain, sex as a substitute for real connection etc.)
The good news is that once we become aware of, and heal these blocks and restrictions, they will be gone forever, and we will be able to expand into the new, healthier, and happier people we are meant to be.
Wishing you much light and love as always,
