On Friday 5th July 2024 we will experience the new moon in Cancer (the Crab)
Watery Cancer is the energy of sensitivity – the emotional soul, who nurtures and cares for self and others.
Cancer
(The Crab)
What does this mean for us at the time of the New Moon?
During the June full moon, we were encouraged to learn to ground and centre ourselves.
Now as we move into the constellation of Cancer, our feelings and emotions become the focus of our attention.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon and the Moon represents the feminine energies of intuition, comfort and empathy.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
According to Psychology Today, emotional intelligence includes:
- Being aware of and able to name one’s own emotions and feelings.
- The ability to use those emotions to complete tasks like problem solving.
- The ability to regulate one’s own emotions when triggered.
- Being able to recognise the influence of others’ emotions on us.
- Helping others to do the same.
According to Harvard Business School, emotional intelligence is one of ‘the most sought-after interpersonal skills in the workplace’.
So many people think they are self-aware, but apparently only 10% – 15% actually are!
So how can we improve our emotional intelligence?
Some ideas include:
- Daily journalling: the process of self-reflection provides a mirror to us.
- Practice active listening: how often do we just listen, without thinking of the next thing to say? Eye contact and open body language are important listening skills.
- Practice compassion rather than judgement – this includes for oneself as well as for other people.

It has been shown that the more emotionally intelligent we are, the happier we feel! (PsychCentral.com)
I wish us all a journey of becoming more emotionally intelligent.
